About the Opportunity
This position places you at the forefront of a major transformation initiative within Capitec Bank. The team is replacing manual, spreadsheet-driven regulatory reporting processes with a scalable, Python-based automation platform. As a Data Engineer, you will design, build, and maintain robust data platforms, applications, and infrastructure that power data-driven decision-making across the organization.
The Regulatory Reporting Automation Platform combines software engineering, data engineering, cloud technologies, and configurable rules engines to process large volumes of financial data and transform it into regulator-ready outputs. Your contributions will enhance data quality, auditability, and operational efficiency while ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements.
Key Responsibilities
As a Data Engineer in this role, you will be expected to:
- Design, build, and maintain scalable and efficient data platforms and applications
- Analyse business and system requirements to inform solution design
- Contribute to solution design documentation alongside Data Architects
- Build and maintain data pipelines and applications that ensure reliable and efficient data flow
- Process large volumes of financial data and transform it into regulatory reporting outputs
- Implement data quality and governance measures within the platform
- Work with cross-functional teams including finance, IT, and business analysts to deliver data-driven solutions
- Communicate technical progress to non-technical stakeholders effectively
Qualifications
The minimum educational requirement is a Grade 12 National Certificate or Vocational qualification, along with a Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or Information Technology. An Honours Degree in Computer Science or Information Technology is the preferred qualification level.
Required Knowledge and Skills
This position demands a comprehensive technical skill set focused on modern data engineering practices:
Core Technical Knowledge
- Advanced Python programming – this is the core technical requirement for the role
- Strong SQL skills, including data modelling principles and query optimization
- Deep knowledge of AWS cloud data services
- Application development and API design capabilities
- Experience with Django or a similar backend framework is advantageous
- Kubernetes and containerized data solutions
- Batch processing concepts and basic stream processing
- ETL pipeline design, including error handling and recovery mechanisms
- Data lake and data warehouse architectural patterns
- Data quality and governance implementation practices
- CI/CD principles, version control, and automated testing
- Infrastructure as code and workflow orchestration tools
Professional Experience
Candidates must have at least five years of experience in data engineering or a closely related field, with direct involvement in solution implementation and integration. The following experience is essential:
- Leading or significantly contributing to data engineering projects
- Strong, hands-on Python and AWS experience
- Backend application development using Django or similar frameworks
- API development experience
- Working with cross-functional teams including finance, IT, and business analysts to understand business needs and deliver data-driven solutions
- Communicating technical progress to non-technical stakeholders
Experience with Snowflake is considered an advantage for this position.
